Describe your business: We provide drug testing and drug-free workplace services to employers and individuals in all areas of the United States. Our niche is a state-of-the-art technology software platform combined with Medical Review Officer (MRO) services, drug testing, training and consultation. National Drug Screening offers one system for scheduling, ordering, resulting and processing paperless drug testing for laboratory and rapid instant drug testing.
What’s your professional background? I have been in the drug testing industry since 1993. I formerly owned and operated Florida Drug Screening and sold it in 2009. I regularly provide expert witness testimony, consulting and training programs for employers, collectors, TPA’s, labs and others in the drug testing industry. Currently, I continue my consulting and training work, serve as president and CEO of National Drug Screening and serve on the Board of Directors of the Drug & Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA merged with NDASA in 2023). I was born and raised in New York City and attended Manhattan College, graduating in 1979 with degrees in marketing and accounting.
Your business philosophy: Engage the customer with great customer service and a great customer experience using product and service knowledge, technology and a passion to help the customer do it the right way.
Biggest challenge: Although it is a challenge, we look forward to it every day; helping employers understand their responsibilities and liabilities with their drug testing programs. We don’t just sell drug testing; we educate employers to reduce their exposure to liability with best practices. We talk to large and small businesses every day that implement drug testing without protecting themselves with comprehensive drug free workplace policies.
Proudest moment as a businessperson: I actually have several; one was serving as the chairman of the board for the national drug testing industry trade association — the Drug & Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA). The others were awards from the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce for Best Place to Work and Entrepreneur of the Year; and finally the 2015 award for Entrepreneur of the Year from the national drug testing industry trade association — the Drug & Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA).
Business advice: My advice always has five components: knowledge is power, embrace technology, market yourself as well as your business, have an open mind taking off any blinders while always be looking for opportunities and, finally, sell with integrity while selling to earn a fair profit.
What’s next? Launching National Drug Screening was intended to be something to keep me busy and earn some extra money after a few years of retirement. It is has not worked out that way.
Our business last year exceeded $1 million in sales. We are now expecting this business to grow very rapidly and this will keep me very busy.
Our focus for many years will be on helping employers navigate through the drug-free workplace regulations and laws. We now do business all over the United States, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico; I have visited clients in Puerto Rico, now I need to get to Hawaii.
