The legalization of marijuana is a subject that has been left up to state legislators over the past 15 years. As we see more and more take the path to legalization, we see the stigma surrounding marijuana continue to change. Could it be that this evolving perception is leading to more users? Maybe, but it is too early to tell. The reason is left up to interpretation, but the data shows that marijuana use is clearly on the rise.
The Data
- Around 12.5% of adults in the United States were using Marijuana in 2013.
- This is about a 25% increase from a survey taken in 2002.
- Since 1998, 23 states including Washington D.C have passed legislation legalizing marijuana for medical use.
- Over the past few years, California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts and Maine have legalized the use of marijuana for recreational use.
- In 2016, a CNN survey reported that 1 in every 8 U.S adults say they use marijuana and 43% say they have at least tried the drug.
Diminishing Social Stigma
With state legislators legalizing medical and recreational use at a higher rate, the stigma surrounding marijuana seems to be diminishing. What was once a taboo subject is now an acceptable and even legal form of activity in multiple states throughout the country. What people need to keep in mind is that it is still dangerous to use marijuana in particular situations. Studies show that the drug impairs motor function, judgement and vision, so it should never be mixed with the operation of a motor vehicle. This is why the Department of Transportation will still maintain strict drug testing policies for all of their drivers and employees.
