Understanding the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/drugfacts\/drugged-driving\">effects<\/a>&nbsp;that drugs can have on your ability to drive is the first step in keeping our roads safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>What makes it so dangerous?<br><\/strong><\/em>While all drugs impair your ability to drive, they all have different effects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/drug-test-for-marijuana\/\"><strong>Marijuana<\/strong><\/a>&#8211; slows your reaction time, impairs judgment of distance and decreases coordination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/cocaine-drug-test\/\"><strong>Cocaine\/ Methamphetamine<\/strong><\/a>&#8211; increases aggressiveness and causes reckless driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/benzodiazepines-drug-test\/\"><strong>Benzodiazepines<\/strong><\/a>&#8211; cause dizziness, drowsiness and have been known to make drivers fall asleep behind the wheel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>How big is the problem?<br><\/strong><\/em>According to the 2014 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, 10 million people ages 12 and older reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs. Of that 10 million people, the majority of them were men ages 18-25. The effect that one drugged driver can have on the road is enormous, so imagine the impact of 10 million!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>How often do drugs cause accidents?<br><\/strong><\/em>This is a difficult question to answer for a number of reasons. One of them being that an accurate roadside drug test still doesn\u2019t exist. Some of the other reasons include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Police will often skip drug testing if the driver in question has an illegal blood alcohol level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most drivers that cause crashes have both drugs and alcohol in their system, so it is hard to determine which had the greater effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, another National Drug Use and Health survey showed that 11% of all deadly crashes in the United States were related to a drugged driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>How can we prevent it?<br><\/strong><\/em>The most important thing to remember is that people under the influence of drugs are not using rational thought. If you notice someone under the influence trying to drive, it is up to you and everyone at that location to get them home safe.
