We were talking about the 5-panel drug test and what\u2019s beyond it. So, we\u2019re going to kind of update that and we\u2019re going to talk today about common drug testing panels for employment testing, probation testing, individual testing. Let\u2019s learn about common drug testing panels.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/blogs\/about-national-drug-screening-nds-2\/\">Joe Reilly, President of National Drug Screening<\/a>. If you\u2019ve done a drug test at any point in your life or you\u2019re an employer that does drug testing, you\u2019ve probably heard of what\u2019s called the 5-panel drug test. And that\u2019s pretty traditional; been around since the late 1980s. It\u2019s what DOT uses as the gold standard for drug testing, but that 5-panel test has evolved over the years. It\u2019s not the same today as it was 15 years ago.\u00a0<\/p><p>So, it\u2019s important to <strong>understand a little bit more about a 5-panel drug test, and then also talk about a 10-panel drug test or a 12-panel drug test, or a 17-panel drug test.<\/strong> So, let\u2019s dive into that.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-395ab90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"395ab90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"5panel\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<style>\/*! elementor - v3.17.0 - 08-11-2023 *\/\n.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}<\/style><h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5-Panel Drug Test <\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e38724b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e38724b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/5-panel-drug-test\/\">5-panel drug test<\/a> <\/strong>can be a urine specimen, a hair specimen, or an oral fluid specimen. And it should also have with it what we call \u2018specimen validity testing\u2019 at the laboratory, which is checking for specific gravity and creatine, pH levels, and potential oxidizing adulterants. Basically, validity testing to determine that it is in fact urine, and it hasn\u2019t been a test that\u2019s been tampered with.<\/p><p>So, there\u2019s three or four versions of the traditional or standard five drug test, 5 panel drug test that are in use. And I always recommend the most recent 5 panel drug test; the same 5 panel drug test that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/dot-drug-test\/\">DOT<\/a> uses. And that drug test includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/drug-test-for-marijuana\/\">Marijuana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/cocaine-drug-test\/\">Cocaine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/phencyclidine-drug-test\/\">PCP or Phencyclidine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/amphetamines-drug-test\/\">Amphetamines<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/opiates-drug-test\/\">Opioids<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Instant or rapid drug testing is also popular.\u00a0 The most popular instant test is the 5-panel often also called 5 panel rapid drug test.<\/p><p>Now where we\u2019ve seen some expansion on that 5 panel, is that under the Amphetamines, we\u2019re also testing for Methamphetamines and we\u2019re testing for MDMA or Ecstasy. Where we\u2019ve also seen expansion on that 5-panel drug test, is the Opioids. We used to call it \u2018opiates\u2019 we call it Opioids. And the first change we saw was a metabolite called 6-Acetylmorphine, or 6AM for short or 6M for short, was added to the opiates panel to specifically detect heroin use.<\/p><p>We\u2019ve also added what we call \u2018expanded opiates\u2019. Expanded opiates are Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Oxycodone, and Oxymorphone. So, I call this a 5-panel drug test with expanded opiates or a 5 panel DOT-like drug test. When I say \u2018DOT-like\u2019, I mean it\u2019s the same configuration of drugs that is used for Department Of Transportation regulated drug testing.<\/p><p>So, we know what the 5 panel is, and I\u2019ll always recommend that you use this 5 panel DOT-like that includes the expanded opiates.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a225e0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a225e0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"10panel\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">10-Panel Drug Test\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9175d3a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9175d3a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Now some folks in non-DOT testing, non-regulated testing, look at a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/10-panel-drug-test\/\">10-panel test<\/a><\/strong>. So that\u2019s kind of our other standard type test, is the 10-panel test. The first five are the same and let\u2019s also include the expanded opiates on the first five. Then we add Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Methaqualone, Methadone, and Propoxyphene. That gives us the standard 10 panel test. And in the drug testing industry and at the laboratories, everybody knows what a 10-panel test is.\u00a0<\/p><p>Now it\u2019s important to note that some labs are dropping the Methaqualone, and it\u2019s now a 9-panel test. Why are they dropping the Methaqualone? That\u2019s Quaaludes. Nobody uses them anymore. They\u2019re not getting any positives anymore. Why spend the money to test for it? It\u2019s still tested by many labs, but some labs are dropping it.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-619780a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"619780a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"other\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Other Drug Test Panels, Beyond the 5 and 10 Panel  \n\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52a85d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"52a85d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>So, we got the 5 panel. We got the 10 panel.<\/p><p>Now somebody calls me and says, \u2018I need a 13-panel drug test\u2019.<\/p><p>Well, I don\u2019t know what that is. Okay?<\/p><p>Because when we go on, when we go beyond the 10 panel, there\u2019s no standard. So, what are the three more drugs that someone wants when they say they need a 13-panel drug test? We need to know what they are. We need to know a list of the drugs that you want tested for.<\/p><p>Now, some of the common drugs that we see when we hear about a 13 panel or a 14 panel, or a 15 panel, some of those common drugs would be fentanyl. We\u2019ve all heard about fentanyl late lately in the news on TV, in the movies; people are dying from fentanyl. So, fentanyl can be added.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldrugscreening.com\/fentanyl-drug-test\/\">Drug testing for fentanyl is now available.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>Ketamine, or horse tranquilizer. Young people are using ketamine. Tramadol, often used in hospital settings. Lot of hospital systems will test for Tramadol as well as fentanyl. They might also test for Meperidine.<\/p><p>And another big one we see is buprenorphine; often called BUP, b-u-p. Which is testing for Suboxone. Suboxone is an alternative medication for people who have previously been addicted to heroin, or Oxycontin, and they\u2019re trying to get off those drugs, suboxone is prescribed.<\/p><p>However, some people that get Suboxone from their doctors sell it to their friends and their friends use it to get high. So, we see a lot of testing for buprenorphine, which is picking up the Suboxone.<\/p><p>Now, with urine testing, we can do the 10 panel, the 13 panel, we could go up in healthcare professional type testing, we go up to maybe like 20 different drugs. But we need to know what the drugs are.<\/p><p>Hair testing, we\u2019re at about 17 panels. So, we have a 17-panel hair test. That\u2019s going to include the ones I mentioned; fentanyl, ketamine, Tramadol, meperidine, buprenorphine.<\/p><p>Oral fluid testing is still somewhat limited. We see some of our labs can do the 9 panel that I mentioned, and some of our labs can add alcohol testing to that oral fluid test. So that\u2019s available also.<\/p><p>Now, just to close out, it\u2019s really important to understand in your drug testing program, \u2018what are you testing for\u2019. If you\u2019ve had a drug testing program for 20 years, non-DOT drug testing program for the past 20 years, and nobody\u2019s ever changed that 5 panel, you\u2019re still doing the old 5 panel. And you\u2019re not including Oxycontin, which is a drug that is being abused. Other expanded opiates \u2018hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and oxymorphone\u2019.<\/p><p>So, you got to know what you\u2019re testing for as an employer. You know, someone looks high all the time. Someone\u2019s falling asleep all the time. Productivity is off. You do the 5-panel drug test and they\u2019re clean.
